The year was 2008 and eBay was starting to pull away from 3rd party sellers and move towards an Amazon model. This left many SMB’s uneasy and on the hunt for an alternative. “EBay Alternatives” were popping up everywhere but it was hard to tell the difference from any of them (other than most were built in PHP, based off a template that had your marketplace online in 20 minutes…yuck!). Then while researching eCommerce opportunities, I stumbled upon a site that stood out. It was an eye-catching green and the navigation was smart and intuitive. It was named Bonanzle at the time and from the moment I saw it I knew it was special, and I wanted to be a part of it.
I met with Bill Harding (founder), in Kirkland at a coffee shop and the rest is history. I would join Bill to Co-Found Bonanza and help him scale the business. Today, Bonanza is the largest 100% seller-focused eCommerce Marketplace. As of this writing, the site lists over 30 million items for sale!
Thanks to Waybackmachine for confirming my relevancy to Bonanza’s history. The new site design seems to have completely removed me from the site! Professionally, Bonanza was one of the greatest experiences of my career. I was exposed to an environment that many founders dream being a part of and got to work with brilliant people every day.
